"MAY YOUR CHOICES REFLECT YOUR HOPES,
NOT YOUR FEARS."
THE JUSTICE INITIATIVE
While not readily apparent, inequities in the criminal justice system have a profound impact on the health of vulnerable populations. In addition to dying in police and/or judicial custody at disproportionate rates, minorities are also incarcerated at double the rate of other socio-economic groups in the U.S. and nearly triple the rates of other industrialized countries.
We need a thoughtful, innovative, and bold new approach that focuses on studying and addressing the root cause of these disparities. This will only be achieved by engaging all stakeholders, conducting empirical research, and implementing precise policy and system changes.
To address these issues, The Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health at Meharry Medical College has launched the Justice Initiative. A comprehensive research and interventional program designed to foster research that will make impactful positive change.
